This was made for a video game called ANNA. It was a side scrolling horror game that my team and I developed at University Centre Weston. Early development was focused on story, characters and concepts. In the beginning I was tasked with coming up with some character concepts art for a mistress. The Mistress was originally going to be the main antagonist that would turn into a giant spider and attack Anna.
The first early concept was made fairly quickly, as I wanted to experiment with the design. For the early hairstyle I thought I’d give her spiky hair to give her that young and wild aesthetic. For the second hairstyle I designed the shape to resemble a spider to fit with the theme of her character. Looking back, it was too out there for the indie game we were making. Modelling the hair would have been a nightmare.
When I first started drawing her human form I was having trouble getting the proportions just right. Back then, I did not draw women much, so getting everything to look correct was hard. I asked my colleges who design characters advice on how to improve the anatomy, and they suggested that I looked up some reference images online. This time I drew the body nude so I could apply better shapes to the anatomy.
One of the writers on our team suggested that I should design a couple of concepts for outfits that the Mistress should wear. She gave me some reference images to work with and I sketched them on top of the body.
